I love the book. But this book is published in China, and I cannot tolerate the toxic-chemical stench. The book is airing out on a clothesline on my (covered) back porch. There is no way I would put this volume in a child's hands unless that stench goes away.

Have taught this book over the years but lost my copy. For some reason it has become very hard to find. Was able to find / buy high quality used and new copies here.
As an adult I really liked it, especially as a read-aloud book. However, I don't know how appealing it would be to a child. The graphics are great and definitely enhance the story.
This is so lovely i cry when I read it.
This book has become a new favorite for reading with kids. It was a good springboard for a history lesson of the Great Depression and reusing and recycling as kids are needing to learn today. The child in the story always had a very positive outlook on life. The students commented on her attitude which affected the people around her. After reading we took cuttings and planted them in recycled containers for taking home. The artwork was a very special part of the book. We observed the colors used and how they made us feel as we read. A mini-lesson on color was enjoyed. It is a very rich book to be read aloud.
One of our favorite picture books. We love the little girl's optimistic attitude, even in difficult situations. And the letters back to her family are so heartwarming. Plus the pictures are just beautiful!
A beautiful throwback to the kind of stories that reflect loneliness and love with gentleness and depth that are absent from most children's stories. A little girl goes to live with her uncle during the Great Depression and turns her green thumb into a pathway to her uncles's heart. This is a superb book.
This was a lovely story about a girl who must leave her home to go to work in the city to help her family during the Great Depression. She is brave and sweet and instead of dwelling on her problems, she works throughout the story to bring the beauty of flowers to her uncle and his assistants. Her goal is to make her uncle smile--and though she doesn't succeed, she realizes that he does love her and truly cares for her. A lovely tale--with perfect illustrations. I want more by this team!
I love the book. But this book is published in China, and I cannot tolerate the toxic-chemical stench. The book is airing out on a clothesline on my (covered) back porch. There is no way I would put this volume in a child's hands unless that stench goes away.
