Women from rich family skips college to join the army. Everyone in her unit dies except her. (Well, she dies to, but she gets over it.) She comes home with night terrors, refuses offers from her rich parents to pay her way through college, refuses a job in the family business, refuses veterans benefits. She gets a job working the night shift at a...hardware store?, doesn't date, doesn't have friends, has no social life beyond what her parents force on her. Then her sister dies and the protagonist becomes obsessed with her niece. Then she discovers she has rare magic powers but has to be forced to learn how to use them...this is clearly someone who prefers to fight then to study. Oh, there are vampires, I almost forgot them...probably because they are kind of forgettable. The characterization is much better developed than the fantasy elements. If you like your Life After Wartime/Survivor's Guilt novels with a dash of vampires, this is the book for you.

I'm not sure if the author is going for an anti-elitist "You don't have to go to college or be rich to lead a worthwhile life" message or a "This character is paralyzed by PTSD, Survivor's Guilt, and grief, and has to move on" message...there are hints of both. I couldn't help thinking of what this story looks like from the perspective of her father, who is dealing with the death of one daughter and another that clearly needs help but is refusing it.

I'm not talking much about the Fantasy elements, probably because there isn't much to say. Vampires straight out of Urban Fantasy Central Casting pursued by the team of a hot Vampire and a broke girl with rare magic powers she doesn't understand. In an unusual deviation from the trope, the vampire romantic lead wasn't explicitly a Master Vampire or rich.

I really enjoy the world that these books all take place in, so it was nice to discover another person who we can follow around on their journey. I actually expected more connections between this series and the previous one, but I still really enjoyed this introduction.

Lex recently lost her sister (who you might recognize from the previous series) and has been working her butt off to try to fit into society (sort of). She is active in her family, takes special care of her niece, and has a steady job. Everything gets turned upside-down when she stops an attempted kidnapping of her niece by some super strange folks. Oh, and she gets stabbed enough to make her heart stop. Turns out, this isn’t the first time Lex should have died, and that really makes the doctors scratch their heads. The supernatural community, always on the lookout, end up sending Quin (a vampire) to check her out. Along with being pretty much impossible to kill, she also can’t be “pressed” by vampires, and has a very special niece. Throw all these things together and a whole bunch of people are suddenly way too interested in Lex’s life.

As a character, I am loving Lex. The only thing that I have some hesitation on is the need for her to have any sort of romantic entanglement. While it’s not a huge part of the story, I still really appreciate a nice tough chick who can hold her own and Lex is certainly that. I’m really interested to see where she goes overall in this set of books and can’t wait to see what other misadventures await our new inductee to the Old World.
Decent story, but I had to twice set it down and come back to it again later, as the main character's actions were just too irritating to handle. Young woman with a military history (something bad happened, but we don't know what), loving family, dead siblings, secret power (Uber-power), vampires, witches, and her parents are a mystery too.
I found myself constantly comparing it to Mark Henwick's Bite Back series, but this one has less sexual tension.
My biggest problem with the story, and the parts I had to walk away from, was the main characters acceptance of threats and harm. At one point she meets a woman who hates her on sight, tosses her into a car, knocks her unconscious, and...that's it. Her mission is so important that she just lets it go. Who does that? The same thing happens any time she interacts with any potential ally, threats and abuse, and rather than garner any sympathy from me, I just ended up feeling like we ought to hit her again. This is a woman with some major power but it scares her and even though she's fighting for her and her families life, doesn't seem to put serious effort into learning about it (common theme in these type stories).
I fully understand the predator/prey concept inherent in the vampire themes, but for all her supposed power, this woman is prey. The only reason she isn't dead is because no one put any serious effort into killing her.
As far as comparing it to pre-skank Anita Blake...nope.
Potentially interesting story line and good editing couldn't overcome the weak main character for me, so I doubt I will be looking for book two.
Of course the obvious comparisons will be made to Charlaine Harris. Yes, in this world there are vampires, werewolves and witches. And while "Boundary Crossed" may lack the charm and atmosphere of Bon Temps, Melissa Olson has created a believable world in Boulder, a place where supernatural beings run coffee shops and farms and our hero is the daughter of a hippie shoe magnate.

I call books like "Boundary Crossed" beach reads. They're fun. They don't require a lot of brain power. They're hard to put down and the whole reading experience is quite enjoyable. The pacing of the story is right on target. The characters, including the secondary characters, are unique and interesting and, most importantly, our hero, Lex is someone to root for. She's not perfect, but she's likable. Too many unlikable heroes these days.

Overall a fun book, a new world to explore with interesting characters forming complex relationships. I look forward to the next book.
