How do you tell if an AI is sentient? I've seen this explored in any number of novels, in one fashion or another, and this is not a bad case.I found the pathway to a feel-good resolution the author used to be a bit too easy, in some ways. That said, the author seems to have been more interested in trying to demonstrate true sentience to the satisfaction of the reader, rather than go for gritty realism in the story.
The android in the story is, in many ways, a better woman for her man than any natural woman could be, especially after achieving consciousness. I'm sure that is the point, but I'm actually kinda jealous of the android's lover, lol.
There is a fair amount of bare-bones erotica in the story. It IS about a sexbot achieving consciousness, after all. None of it is really obnoxious and much of it is even pertinent to the story.
Anyway, it was a decent read. Not sure why I only rate it a 3, but it feels like it is missing something I want in stories, I guess. Not enough doubt during the "black moment," maybe?

I have been a fan of Anthony's writing for years, but I am sorry to say I don't think this one comes up to his standard. It isn't bad, though, and if you like your SF sexy, you'll love this.
Piers Anthony used to be a great writer. To bad this reads like some of the self published erotica you can also find on .
For some reason this book just didn't do any thing for me. The writing was missing some thing. Too predictable
i dont think i have missed single book written by this outstanding author. his books bring the magical world they tell about to life in my mind and i feel as though i am really there. this book is no exception, its outstanding in the genre of robotics novels, and as always brings a new slant to whatever subject mr anthony decides to right about.
Piers is one truly fine author across a great spectrum of genres. I think he's especially good in my two favorites, fantasy and science fiction. I just wish I had the creative spark and the discipline and the craft to do the same but I guess the world needs readers too.
Been a while since reading Anthony. An excellent writer, but in general I am not a fantasy fan. Really impressed with how he put this story together. To read how he matter-of-factly applied detailed sexual behavior in the context of an exercise devoted to a discussion of consciousness is salutary in the extreme. Very sly to discuss love connected to sexual intimacy. Idealized to be sure, yet not unattainable. Thank you for this important novella.
It's hard for me to believe that this sci-fi series had such a profound effect on me. I believed in the robots, just as I also believed in the robots' inventors, and the power of positive thinking. It all worked together to convince me that the program worked, and that seeing a demo would finally seal the deal. And so it did.
