When I actually began this book I really did not care for it, as the language and description seemed so crude to me. However, after about an hour I fell in love with this story. This story was so captivating. The man character is 70 year old Addy Shad. She lives in a trailer park, and has had a very hard life. One morning a woman knocks on her door, and asks Addy if she could take her 5 year old daughter for a while. Sharla, is the 5 year old. Addy says yes and takes Sharla in. Sharla's is dirty and in rags. The mother does not care for this child, and takes off. Addy begins to attempt to mother the child who's own mother never really cared for her. Addy treats this child with love and kindness. Addy gives the child a good life. While taking care of Sharla, memories of Addy's own past come to head. This author's description and use of words pull you right in to Addy's life story. A rape that resulted in a pregnancy, leaving home and fleeing to Detroit, the loss of her child, lost loves, marriage, more children, etc. The author also manages to mix in a good portion of history into the story from the Underground Railroad to Prohibition. This book kept my interest and I loved that the human heart triumphed.

I really enjoy this Novel "Rush Home Road". The style of this authors writing is very compatible to my preferred reading style. It certainly kept my attention (I was never bored) - but at the same time, the writing had a gentle consistent flow to how the story was being told. The book jacket says that this is Lori Lansens first Novel. If so, GREAT job!! I was pulled into the life of the characters in such a way that I kept thinking I was reading a Memoir.
Very heartwarming well written book about a kind, humble girl who is not treated fairly by her parents and has to find her own way at a very young age. She ends up living a full life and becomes a wonderful "mum" at age 70 to a little 5 year old girl whose mom deserts her. It turns out fortuitous for both of them.
I have been reading chapters in many novels waiting for the perfect page turner only to be disappointed and continuing my search. This book was perfect. Sorry it had to end, read it in 2 days.
Lori Lansens is a gifted story teller and she is on my watch list for her next book. From the time I started reading the story of Sharla Cody and Addy Shad I was mesmerized by both lives. Lori does such a great job of creating the details of Sharla's life with her young Mother who isn't ready for Motherhood, that is made you want to grab this little girl right out of the book and take care of her.
In heartwarming detail she created the Old Woman's life- Addy Shad. It broke your heart to read her story and learn what she had endured as a young woman and how through a series of brutal and tragic events she lost the love of her life, as well as her family through no real fault of her own.

Together Lori weaves the two stories together and creates a beautful relationship between the old woman and the little girl, right on through the surprising and happy ending.

I bought this book because I read Lori Lansens' The Girls a couple years ago. What a surprise this book is! Completely different from The Girls, it's the story of an old black woman (she's 70--I have friends older who don't seem as old as this woman; maybe she should have been 90 in the story) and a 5-year-old half-black girl. The girl is abandoned by her mother and her father is unknown, but old Addy soon realizes Sharla isn't a brat, she's merely untrained. The narrative jumps back and forth in time so the reader discovers Addy's life story as well as the present-day events concerning Sharla, and both storylines are tightly woven and well presented.

I even learned something Chatham, not too far from where I live in the Upper Peninsula, was the terminus of the Underground Railroad, and is the setting of most of this story.

Anyone who enjoys a good, uplifting story about strong women will love this book.
I loved Lori Lansens other books, The Girls A Novel and The Wife's Tale A Novel so I started this book with high hopes.

I wasn't disappointed. Lansens has a great ability to make her characters so real, you feel like you know them or would love to meet them.

Little Sharla Cody is a lost child, no safe place to live, no true love or care and a mother that doesn't deserve the title.
Her mother asks a neighbor, unknown to her, to care for Sharla for awhile because her boyfriend doesn't like having her around. It broke my heart to hear of the few years Sharla had on Earth and the horrible treatment she endured. And yet, she finds herself in the home of Adelaide Shadd, a 70-year-old black woman who is not sure about taking care of this odd little girl. Luckily for Sharla, Adelaide is a wonderful woman with a story to tell of her own.

The book goes back and forth between Adelaide's difficult adolescence and life and 'present day' (really 1978) with Adelaide and Sharla trying to find a way to live together. Both characters have very likable personalities but make enough mistakes to be human.

Their stories are hard to imagine but show the triumphs we can achieve even through struggles and heartache.

Not quite as good as her more recent books but still a wonderful book and well worth 5 stars.
This book is beautifully written and follows the story of Addy Shadd. It goes back and forth between her current life, when she is suddenly presented with a 5 year old girl to take care of, and her early life from teenage years on. It's a story about fortitude, courage, and doing the right thing even when the going gets tough. Addy's life isn't easy, but her response to it is remarkable. I couldn't stop reading this book until the wee hours of the night. I don't want to say too much more about it and give away the arc of the story, but Addy definitely has her crosses to bear. I loved her.
